Welcome to the website of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida. We are delighted that you found your way to our website in God's providence. Please spend as much time clicking around to learn more about our fellowship. If you have any questions along the way, feel free to click our "Contact" page above.
We are a reformed baptist congregation. We value expository preaching, God centered worship, family discipleship and a community rooted in the gospel. We desire to encourage followers of Christ to faithfully live by God's grace and for His glory. Faithfulness, then, is our measure for success; not buildings, bodies or budgets.
What to Expect When You Arrive
When you come to one of our meetings expect to be greeted and welcomed by people just like you. You will be provided with a “Worship Journal” (our bulletin) which will help guide you through our time together in the worship gathering. You will also find a visitor sheet in the worship journal to fill out and place in the offering plate near the end of the service. We would like to send you a thank you note for gathering with us for worship; we will not show up at your home uninvited the following week. We would also like to give you a FREE BOOK from our book table just for being our guest. Simply ask a greeter to receive your book.
Our hope is that you will find the Lord Jesus Christ honored and exalted. You will find our times of worship to be serious, simple and joyful. Our service is usually just under two hours. If you are looking to be entertained, I am afraid you will be disappointed. Our focus in worship is on Jesus Christ and we give time to reading the Bible publicly, to prayer, to singing and to preaching.
What to Expect from our Singing
Although terms can often be misleading, our songs are a blend of old and new. We love singing the Psalms, powerful hymns of the Reformation and Evangelical Awakenings, as well as doctrinally-rich modern choruses. We prefer congregational singing, which emphasizes the gathered body singing praise to God with one voice, over performed music. Our music is lead by a guitar but it is the voices we want to be heard from our congregation. We use the Hymns of Grace hymnal.
What to Expect in the Preaching
Preaching is expositional, meaning that it seeks to explain and apply a particular passage of the Bible. Sermons usually last around 50 minutes and strive to include exegesis (detailed explanation of the text), doctrinal teaching, exhortation, and application. On a regular basis, our sermon series alternate between the Old and New Testaments. All preaching is filtered through the glorious gospel, the Bible’s main message of God saving sinners through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
What to Expect for Your Children
We have a warm and friendly nursery where your child (3 years old & under) is welcomed and cared for during the service. All nursery workers have passed background checks to ensure that your child is in a safe and loving environment. Click here for our Nursery Handbook. However, you are also welcome to have your child in the service with you.
What You Should Expect to Wear
We encourage you to dress well with modesty in mind. You will notice people in our congregation wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Some others will wear a collared shirt, sport coat and dress pants. And on occasion you will spot a tie. Our goal is to remember that what matters is our hearts, that we cherish Christ and his gospel, and love the Lord with all that we are.
What You Should Expect to Bring
Because we seek to be a Word-centered church, all you will need to bring is your Bible and a pen. If you do not have a Bible, we would love to provide you with one. We use the English Standard Version (ESV), though there are many good translations represented throughout our congregation any given Sunday.
